Storyline: Global automakers are gathering in south China's Guangdong Province for the 23rd Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition, where the focus is shifting from traditional vehicle displays to now shining the spotlight on the new collaborations and smart technology applications that are taking shape amid a continually evolving market. The ten-day event opened on Friday under the theme "New Tech, New Life," attracting leading some of the world's leading automakers set to unveil 93 new vehicle models, while also highlighting the deepening industrial chain collaboration that is injecting fresh momentum into the automotive market. The ripple effects of the exhibition are already being felt beyond Guangzhou. At a car dealership in the nearby city of Foshan, customer traffic has surged as more customers look to take advantage of subsidies to help them purchase a new set of wheels. "The auto show has drawn huge crowds, and it coincides with Guangdong Province's new car purchase subsidy program, which offers up to 5,000 yuan (over 700 U.S. dollars) in incentives," said Liang Yiyang, general manager of the store operated by Chinese automaker BAIC Arcfox. The bustling activity seen at such auto dealerships comes amid an ongoing strategic shift as automakers adapt to evolving policies and the challenge posed by increased market competition. With China set to introduce a new purchase tax policy for new energy vehicles (NEVs) in 2026, luxury brand Voyah Auto, which recently surpassed 300,000 units in sales, is moving from a price-based strategy towards a more value-driven approach. Lu Fang, the firm's CEO, says the changes in the NEV market will help spur greater innovation as the auto sector continues to evolve. "The ongoing adjustment of subsidy policies will accelerate the industry's transition from relying on subsidies to pursuing breakthroughs through innovation. We will further enhance the resilience and operational efficiency of the industrial chain, and continuously increase research and development and investment in areas such as intelligence and automotive ecosystems," he said. On top of these new policies, increased collaboration between manufacturers and dealerships at the local level is stimulating new momentum for market consumption in various ways, and tapping into these new trends, greater cross-sector collaboration is also reshaping the entire industrial chain. GAC Aion, an electric vehicle subsidiary of the Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC Group) has partnered with leading e-commerce platform JD.com and top Chinese battery maker CATL to launch a new tripartite model that brings battery-swap capabilities to compact cars within a more affordable price range, with other initiatives such as exclusive sales channels and battery subscription services helping further reduce costs. Such cooperation is also extending across borders, with a Chinese head-up display technology firm recently signing an agreement with U.S. automotive supplier Visteon to adopt a "designed in China, produced by Visteon" model, supplying smart cabin products to global automakers such as Ford and General Motors.
