Lebanon: Lebanese mourn victims killed by Israeli airstrike in Beirut
Storyline: Hundreds of Lebanese people gathered in Beirut on Monday to mourn senior Hezbollah commander Haytham Ali Al-Tabtabai and four others killed by an Israeli airstrike in Beirut's southern suburbs on Sunday. Israeli warplanes struck Haret Hreik, a densely populated neighborhood in Beirut, killing Haytham Ali Al-Tabtabai, Hezbollah's highest-ranking military official who is widely described as the group's "chief of staff." Four others were reported dead and at least 28 wounded, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. The strike ripped through residential blocks, shattered buildings and terrified families. "When the attack happened, it was a surprise and there was no warning, so people were taken by surprise. We thought it was an attack, and it turned out to be so. We had no idea where the strike hit, and then suddenly we saw the dust," said Bassam Hmede, a local resident. The raid has magnified a climate of fear among civilians. "People no longer feel safe in their homes. We are surrounded by buildings. Who knows who live in them? Are we going to continue living in fear? This is not a situation," he added. "I stayed here at home, and the explosion was powerful. Thank God, I wish recovery for the wounded and mercy for the martyrs. We are fine, thank God, and I did not leave my house," said Abu Ali Shahrour, another resident. In the meantime, demonstrators took to the streets in Beirut on Monday to protest an uptick in Israeli attacks and killings of Lebanese and its occupation of areas in southern Lebanon, as the first anniversary of the ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel approached. Since the ceasefire took effect on Nov 27, 2024, which largely ended about 13 months of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, Israel has struck Beirut a few times, while attacking other areas in southern and eastern Lebanon almost daily, claiming they are aimed at eliminating Hezbollah "threats".
