Toyota hybrid EV battery catches fire on roadside
A Toyota Camry hybrid electric vehicle was seen catching fire on the roadside.
The white sedan had stopped in front of a repair shop, emitting smoke that thickened until flames appeared in Udon Thani, Thailand.
CCTV footage shows the panicked owner trying to smother the fumes with a shirt before a spark ignited, causing the fire to grow.
The vehicle was quickly engulfed before onlookers approached to help the motorist on November 23 evening.
Shop owner Ta Na Kham Hai, 35, said the flames started from the battery.
He said: 'At that time, I was already sleeping. I came down when I heard the commotion and saw the fire had already burnt the entire car.
'It happened so fast, and the flames spread within ten minutes. The fire started from the battery. I could not do anything.'
Firefighters arrived and managed to douse the fire, bringing it under control.
The mechanic said that he spoke with the owner, who said the hybrid car had been purchased second-hand.
He added: 'From what the owner told me, he had bought the car and used it for less than a month. He had also reported a problem to the dealership, but it had not been resolved.'
The Toyota was completely wrecked and later towed away from the road. No one was hurt from the fire.
