Girl, 9, killed by landslide as heavy rain batters southern Thailand
A schoolgirl was killed when a landslide smashed into her family home in southern Thailand.
Kanoknuch Chumchuay, 9, was buried with her relatives as a wall of wet earth tumbled down the hillside home in Saturn province on November 22.
Police and volunteers rushed to the property after receiving an emergency call at around 11 am local time. They dug through piles of mud using shovels before clawing the rest of the way through with their hands for fear of injuring the family.
Footage shows the moment rescuers pulled out the unconscious residents from under the rubble.
Kanoknuch and her brother, Phanudech, 28, were both alive when they were rushed to Khuan Kalong Hospital, but the girl was later pronounced dead.
Acting Satun governor Kanit Kongchuay later visited the grieving family at Wat Nuea Khlong Phothiyaram, where the young girl's funeral was held, and provided emergency support. He also ordered the evacuation of around 30 families living in high-risk zones as the threat of further landslides continued.
Authorities said heavy monsoon rains have been battering the area since November 19, affecting some 3,309 households and 8,544 residents.
At least 33 people have been killed in the catastrophic floods in southern Thailand, described by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as 'the worst flooding in 15 years'.
Soldiers, volunteers, and local government units have also been mobilised to hasten relief efforts, but they were hobbled by limited phone signal in the area.
The Thai navy said it was preparing to deploy 14 boats and the aircraft carrier Chakri Naruebet to southern Thailand, with medical teams, supplies, and field kitchens able to supply 3,000 meals a day.
The navy said in a statement: 'The fleet is ready to deliver forces and carry out actions as the Royal Navy orders.'
The Southern Eastern Meteorological Centre said a strong monsoon trough was causing the heavy rainfall, which was expected to ease this week.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rainstorms in the afternoon ,leading to widespread flash floods.
