Japan: Hundreds of Japanese protest against Prime Minister's wrongful remarks on Taiwan
Storyline: Hundreds of people in Tokyo gathered in front of Prime Minister's Office on Tuesday to protest against Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent remarks regarding China's Taiwan region, demanding her to withdraw the wrongful statement. They strongly appealed against having a prime minister who could steer Japan toward the misguided path of war. These protesters also held placards, calling for Takaichi to withdraw the wrong remarks and stop inciting war. "[Takaichi] making such foolish remarks and even proposing to double defense expenditure is tantamount to preparing for war, regardless what she thinks. As citizens, we must oppose such actions. The friendship between Japan and China is very important. The Japanese army had invaded China before, leaving tremendous harm to the Chinese people. These are historical facts. We need to establish a friendly relationship between Japan and China by expressing profound contrition," said a protester. "After the defeat and surrender in World War II, Japan established the Article 9 of its Constitution. Now, the Japanese government is trying to break the pacifist Constitution, which we will never allow. For the Asian people, the Japanese government has done is blurring its responsibility for war, and once again embarking on the path of war after the surrender. I think this is totally wrong," said another protester. At a Diet meeting on Nov 7, Takaichi claimed that the Chinese mainland's "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan and implied the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Strait.
