Villagers are furious after a 100m long rubbish mountain was dumped at a beauty spot.

The huge pile of waste was discovered in a gated yard on a country road by the picturesque village of Wadborough, Worcs.

The eyesore is just two miles from the National Trust property Croome Court which boasts Capability Brown gardens.

The 100m (328ft) long rubbish tip was spotted by locals after it grew higher than the trees.

One villager said: "It's bigger than a house. It's like eight semis. There are tonnes and tonnes of waste."

"My concern is that it is contaminating the brook."

Another said: "No one really knows who owns the land or what goes on there but the rubbish mountain is so big you can't miss it. "

"It's bigger than the trees around it. It's a relief the authorities are involved but I just hope it gets cleared soon." "

The 30ft-high pile lies behind a hedgerow and fencing and towers over a single-storey building protected by a padlocked gate.

The Environment Agency has launched a probe into the illegal dump on Crabbe Lane on the B4084, which is eight miles from Worcester.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating the illegal deposit of waste at the junction of Crabbe Lane and Rebecca Road near Wadborough in Worcestershire. "

"As a live investigation, we are unable to comment further regarding this site. "

"We were not involved in the sale of the land, however we have provided advice and guidance to the landowner on the steps they must now take to remove the waste from the land. "

"We take waste crime seriously and encourage members of the public to report suspicious activity to our incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60." "

The probe comes after a 39-year-old man was arrested as part of an investigation into Britain's biggest fly-tip in Oxfordshire.

The 20ft-high pile of hazardous rubbish was illegally dumped in a field next to the A34 and River Cherwell near Kidlington.

It is believed the waste was dumped in one go and it has since been described by an MP as "threatening an environmental disaster". "
