This is the terrifying moment cars were swept away by a raging flood as relentless monsoon rains battered Indonesia.

Footage shows vehicles being washed away by the powerful torrent tearing through the Lumin Park Housing Complex in Padang City, West Sumatra, on November 27.

Local media reported that at least six people were found drowned, bringing the death toll in West Sumatra to nine.

Ilham Wahab, spokesman for the West Sumatra Regional Disaster Management Agency, said on Thursday afternoon: 'Nine people died, and the search is still ongoing because there are still reports of missing people.

'Thirteen regencies and cities were affected by the disaster. The worst-hit were Padang City, Agam, and West Pasaman.'

Monsoon donwpours have been pounding the island of Sumatra over the past week, triggering landslides and flash floods that submerged thousands of homes.

In West Sumatra, more than 3,300 houses were submerged and some 12,000 residents were evacuated to government shelters.

Authorities said at least 69 people have died and 59 were missing as rescue efforts continue.

Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
