Thousands of fish were found dead and drifting on a lake, allegedly due to pollution linked to nearby construction activity.

Footage shows tiny bodies shimmering like silver confetti across the water in Demak, Central Java, Indonesia, on November 27.

More remains accumulated along the banks as concerned residents paddled out to assess the extent of the incident.

Government officers visited the area and collected water samples for laboratory testing.

Demak Environment Agency Secretary Sudarwanto said: 'The cause has not been established, and conclusions will only be made once laboratory analysis is complete.'

While results are pending, Sudarwanto said investigators are also examining whether the situation may be connected to altered water circulation created by the Semarang–Demak toll road project.

He said: 'Completed sections of the development have formed a basin that limits the exchange between seawater and brackish water. This may have changed water quality and temperature, potentially shocking marine life.'

The agency said findings will be released once examinations are finished.
