HEBRON, WEST BANK, PALESTINE - NOV. 28: Palestinian officials have strongly condemned a recent Israeli decision to remove the Hebron Municipality's administrative authority over the Ibrahimi Mosque and transfer it to a religious council representing a Jewish settlement.

According to the officials, this move constitutes a direct threat to the site and a clear breach of international law. The decision, set to take effect in February 2025, follows Israel's rejection of formal objections filed by the Hebron Municipality and the Palestinian Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs.

The director of the mosque's Waqf, Mutaz Abu Sneineh, stated that the Israeli administration had formally notified them of the decision and posted notices on the mosque's walls. He accused Israel of violating international conventions that protect religious sites and of seizing control of the mosque's water and electricity systems.

Palestinian authorities are reportedly pursuing a legal appeal and have submitted a formal objection to UNESCO, where the mosque is listed as a World Heritage Site. They are calling for international intervention to prevent what they describe as attempts to alter the site's character.

Deputy Mayor of Hebron, Asmaa Sharabati, characterized the decision as part of a broader effort to restrict the municipality's powers. She warned that the move poses a direct threat to a UNESCO World Heritage site and urged the international community to address the issue on diplomatic platforms.

The Ibrahimi Mosque, a site of profound significance for both Muslims and Jews, has been a focal point of conflict. It was the site of a massacre in 1994 and was subsequently divided between Muslim and Jewish worshipers. The mosque is located in an area of Hebron under full Israeli military control.
