Lebanon: Lebanon faces mounting Israeli pressure amid fragile regional diplomacy efforts
An uptick in Israeli attacks across Lebanon is leaving an already troubled ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon shakier than ever. According to a report by the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), since the ceasefire took effect on Nov 27, 2024, there have been more than 10,000 Israeli violations, most involving incursions in Lebanese airspace, with hundreds of people killed. Israel claims that Hezbollah has been trying to rebuild its military capabilities and is smuggling weapons into Lebanon while stepping up the production of explosive drones as an alternative to rockets and missiles. On Sunday, an Israeli attack on Beirut's southern suburbs killed senior Hezbollah commander Haytham al-Tabatabai, among others. It came only two days after Lebanon's president announced that the country had succumbed to an Israeli pressure campaign and agreed to hold negotiations for a permanent end to the "transborder aggressions". In response, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has hinted that it will retaliate for Israel's assassination of al-Tabatabai. At the moment, Lebanon is trapped between intensifying Israeli pressure and fragile diplomatic efforts to contain the tension. Shotlist: Beirut, Lebanon - Nov 22, 2025: 1. All parties remain adamant in their refusal to accept Lebanon's surrender on the one hand, and Israel's concessions on the other. Therefore, based on Israel's daily threats and the messages sent to Lebanon by international envoys, it appears that Israel is preparing to escalate its operations in Lebanon."; Beirut, Lebanon - Nov 23, 2025 5.
