ALEPPO, SYRIA - NOV. 29: Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa marked the first anniversary of Aleppo's liberation on Saturday, describing the city's fall from the former Assad regime as a pivotal moment that led to the rebirth of the entire nation. He stated that with Aleppo, all of Syria was reborn, calling the city their gateway to the whole country.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the historic Aleppo Citadel, President Sharaa addressed the nation on the anniversary of the city's liberation by opposition forces on November 29, 2024.

He characterized the liberation as a critical turning point in the country's history, while paying tribute to the sacrifices made. He recalled the first hours of the liberation, stating that the nation lost much and that its people made great sacrifices, with rivers of blood shed on the path to that day.

The President noted that the event created great hope throughout the country and that the moments when their heroes entered Aleppo and rescued its people from the tyranny of the former regime remain vivid in their hearts today.

Emphasizing the strategic importance of the operation launched from Idlib, he said that in those moments, a new history was being written for all of Syria, with the Aleppo Citadel standing as the strongest symbol of this.

He further claimed that the liberation of Aleppo directly paved the way for advances on the capital, Damascus.

Looking forward, the President declared that the anniversary was not just a celebration of a military victory, but also the declaration of a new era for Syria.

Al-Sharaa concluded by saying that the journey began from that very first moment and that they would work with all their strength to rebuild Syria.

The liberation of Aleppo was a result of "Operation Deterrence of the Enemy," a major offensive launched by opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and the Syrian National Army, on November 27, 2024.

The rapid capture of the city, which was a major stronghold for the Assad regime, ultimately led to the collapse of the government in December 2024.
