Wealthy Chinese prisoners had 'prostitutes and luxury gaming rooms' at 'Bangkok Hilton' prison
Wealthy Chinese inmates allegedly turned a jail into their own private paradise in Thailand.
The VIP prisoners were said to have been living the high life from behind bars as they reportedly had prostitutes and other luxury perks delivered to the Bangkok Remand Prison, also known as the 'Bangkok Hilton'.
Authorities said at least 20 prison officials, including chief warden Manop Chomchuen, were being probed on suspicion of accepting bribes from the rich Chinese crime bosses.
The scandal came to light following a covert raid of the penitentiary on November 16, which reportedly found two young Chinese models arriving to provide sex services at the jail.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Prawut Wongsinin, director-general of the Department of Corrections, said: 'There were two Chinese women there. At that time, they were in a room with two Chinese inmates. One was waiting upstairs.
'They denied that they were selling sex, but we found traces that looked like semen at the scene. We also found a condom and underwear.'
CCTV footage reportedly showed the women visiting every Sunday, allegedly escorted by prison staff through special access routes. Several CCTV recordings had already been deleted.
Alcohol, tobacco, mobile phones, lighters, portable air‑conditioning units, a refrigerator, and a microwave were also seized during the operation. A secret gaming room decked out with leather arm chairs was also allegedly discovered.
Authorities said investigating the longstanding rumours of bribery and preferential treatment at the prison was difficult as there were 'moles' who would alert those involved of impending raids.
Justice Minister Police Lieutenant General Rutthapon Naowarat said 200 Chinese inmates were being held at the prison.
He added: 'In all my years of service, I have never seen inmates wield this level of influence inside a prison. This is completely unacceptable. It undermines the entire justice system. It is disgraceful.'
Prison chief Manop Chomchuen and several senior officers have been transferred from the Bangkok Remand Prison amid the probe.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has vowed tough action on the erring wardens, saying: 'We will wait for the investigation files, but whoever is guilty will not be spared.
'Whoever is responsible must be held accountable. This should never have happened. If there was deliberate misconduct, action will be taken. There is nothing to worry about, the Justice Minister will not ignore it.'
