Japan Coast Guard observes volcanic activity in southwestern islands

KAGOSHIMA PREFECTURE, JAPAN - DEC. 2, 2025 - JAPAN COAST GUARD - RESTRICTED: Japan’s Coast Guard announced on Tuesday, Dec. 2, that gas emissions were detected at Mount Iwo on Satsuma Iwojima Island.

During volcanic observations in the Southwest Islands, intense color changes were observed in the surrounding waters of the island.

Gas emissions were also detected from the Shindake and Furudake volcanoes on Kuchinoerabujima Island.

Officials stated that the data from the region have been updated in the submarine volcano database and that regular monitoring continues to ensure navigation safety.
