China: Cold snap hits northeast China city, disrupting traffic
Storyline: Qitaihe City in China's northernmost province of Heilongjiang has been hit by a fresh cold snap since early Tuesday, leaving roads coated with snow and ice, and disrupting the morning commute. Early Tuesday morning, the city saw snowfall and a sharp drop in temperatures. Local authorities immediately activated emergency plans, deploying road crews and machinery into priority areas, including major roads and school zones. City management, transport and sanitation departments have worked in tandem, using heavy snowplows and brush trucks, while dispatching workers to clear snow off sidewalks and intersections where machines cannot reach. Their goal of the emergency plans, officials said, is to keep traffic flowing and maintain essential city operations despite the freezing conditions. The weather forecast indicates that the cold spell will intensify on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, with the air temperatures expected to hover around minus 20 degrees Celsius.
