Taxi driver narrowly avoids wrong-way head-on crash on dual carriageway
A quick-thinking taxi driver had to swerve to avoid a motorist coming at him head on - on the wrong side of a dual carriageway.
Taxi driver Dean O'Sullivan, 35, was on his way to a pick up on the A249 on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent, when he saw the unmistakable glare of headlights ahead of him.
Dean, who works for iCars Swale, had just seconds to swerve out of the way to avoid a head-on crash just before 5pm on Saturday, November 29.
He said: "I had moved over into lane two and all of a sudden I just saw some headlights coming towards me at speed."
"I started to slow down and I realised there was a car coming the wrong way up the carriageway, head-on towards me."
"I managed to slide over to the left, about halfway into lane one, and avoid the head-on collision with it."
Dad-of-three Dean, a driver for six years, says he would have crashed head on if he had stayed in his lane for just one more second.
He added: "I'm on the road a lot for my job. I often encounter near-misses with people that, quite frankly, shouldn't have a driving licence."
"I do have some quite quick reflexes."
"The adrenaline was pumping all the way until I managed to get to my next job."
"I pulled over, composed myself, and rung my boss to let him know what had happened."
"The heart was definitely racing, and the realisation of what could have actually happened started to set in."
"How close a call it could have been. It could have had devastating consequences for both myself and the driver of the other car."
"I have to always be on alert. I'm always aware of my surroundings and other people on the road."
"You just don't know what other people are going to do."
Neither the taxi company or the driver have sent the evidence to the police.
