BEIRUT, LEBANON - DEC. 2: Pope Leo XIV departed Lebanon on Tuesday, Dec. 2, after concluding a three-day official visit to Beirut, where he met political and religious leaders and urged peace and stability.
His final day included a tour of the medical staff and patients at the Sisters of the Cross Hospital in Jal el-Dib, a silent prayer at the Beirut port explosion site, a Holy Mass on Beirut’s waterfront, and an official farewell ceremony at Rafic Hariri International Airport.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam attended the farewell ceremony.
Aoun said the Pope’s visit would leave a lasting mark on the country and its people, noting that the pontiff had brought messages of hope and peace and had been warmly received across different communities.
He added that this reception reflected the Lebanese public’s deep desire for peace and stability.
Aoun also expressed gratitude for the visit, saying the Lebanese felt the Pope’s affection for the country and sensed the sincerity of his message during their meetings.
Pope Leo XIV said he had spent meaningful days in Lebanon and that departing was difficult for him.
He stated that the trip created a sense of shared progress rather than separation and expressed hope that the spirit of brotherhood and peace embraced during the visit would extend across the Middle East, including among groups currently in conflict.
He said his visit to the site of the Beirut port explosion had deeply affected him and that he prayed for those who lost their lives in the Aug. 4, 2020 disaster.
The Pope also voiced concern about ongoing tension and instability in southern Lebanon and emphasized that hostilities and attacks should come to an end.
He called for choosing peace not only as an objective but also as a path.
After the speeches, the Pope and his delegation departed from Beirut Airport.
Pope Leo XIV had arrived in Lebanon on Nov. 30 following a visit to Türkiye.
