A zoo in Taiyuan City in north China's Shanxi Province is taking measures to heat animal shelters as the city's temperature fell to around minus 10 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. Taiyuan Zoo has installed heat lamps and temperature-control devices for reptiles like snakes and turtles, whose body temperature depends heavily on their surroundings and are particularly sensitive to low temperatures. "[Reptiles] need additional heat lamps, air-conditioning, and high-energy foods during the winter to stay warm and maintain immunity," said Zheng Yuwei, curator of the zoo's amphibian pavilion. Animals from tropical and subtropical regions, including elephants and hippos, are also receiving extra care. The zoo has raised the indoor temperatures in its enclosures to protect the animals from the recent cold snap. SHOTLIST: Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, north China - Recent 1.
