Footage reportedly shows a Russian TOS-1A thermobaric rocket system launching a salvo of ordnance at a Ukrainian stronghold.

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that the strike occurred near the city of Pokrovsk, in Donetsk Oblast, eastern Ukraine, on December 1.

The video allegedly depicts the TOS-1A Solntsepek system firing 220mm rockets at coordinates identified by Russian officials as a fortified Ukrainian position with concealed firing points.

Authorities stated that a drone reconnaissance unit initially detected the target before transmitting its location to the TOS-1A crew.

The unit was instructed to support assault troops and neutralise the Ukrainian strongpoint.

Officials explained that the crew then moved to a deployment point, conducted reconnaissance, and surveyed the approach routes.

Before launching the strike, the commander utilised drone detectors to ensure the airspace was clear and safe.

Once the area was confirmed clear, the TOS-1A crew advanced with cover support and fired a volley of rockets at the designated target.

Russian MoD officials reported that real-time drone surveillance was used to adjust the strike and assess the damage.

After completing the mission, the crew immediately vacated the firing position.

The MoD noted that the operation took place near the frontlines, emphasising the importance of speed and coordination to successfully complete the mission.

Authorities highlighted that thermobaric munitions are typically employed to target personnel in trenches, fortified structures, and lightly armoured vehicles.

A thermobaric warhead is a type of munition that uses a high-temperature, high-pressure blast created by dispersing an explosive aerosol and then igniting it, producing a significantly longer and more destructive shockwave than conventional explosives.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in what the Kremlin is still calling a 'special military operation'.
