France: Forum highlights green energy cooperation between China, La Reunion
A forum was held in La Reunion, France's overseas territory, on Thursday to discuss deepening cooperation between China and the territory in areas such as tourism, renewable energy, and green cities. The forum is co-organized by the Consulate General of China in Saint-Denis, the territory's capital, and the Association of Chinese Merchants and Businesspeople in La Reunion, a commerce alliance with a history of over 100 years. The forum brought together over 100 representatives from the business, academic, and media sectors of the two sides. They regarded the event as a valuable platform for dialogue on new possibilities, injecting fresh momentum into collaboration between China and the island and between China and France. "This event is highly productive, as it identified many specific pathways for cooperation between China and La Reunion island. Multiple collaborations between the two sides are already well underway, including cultural and academic exchanges, tourism partnerships, and recent discussions with sports stakeholders to promote sports development. This forum enabled us to go further, opening new prospects in key areas including sustainable development, building green cities, energy transition, and digital innovation. It strengthened our capacity to better plan future collaborations, particularly in tourism and urban planning. Through direct exchanges with Chinese partners, we sensed a shared willingness to advance more concrete and ambitious projects. In this sense, the forum has fully played its role," said Regine Chane-Hong, a regional councillor of La Reunion. Johnny Law-Yen, president of the Association of Chinese Merchants and Businesspeople in La Reunion, pointed to more space for cooperation with China in sustainable development. "The two themes we discussed this morning were about sustainable development of renewable energy and eco-cities. La Reunion also places high importance on these topics -- the development of our island is clearly progressing in this direction. I believe there is still room for collaborative efforts in the field of renewable energy, especially regarding subsequent energy storage. This is because renewable energy is intermittent. When we need energy, such as at night, we must be able to access it. And this requires storage. China is a complete leader in this field. Therefore, I believe it is necessary to explore how we can improve this cooperation," he said. SHOTLIST: Saint-Denis, La Reunion, France - Nov 27, 2025 1. Exterior of forum venue; 2.
