China: China's power equipment exports charge ahead
Storyline: China's power equipment exports charge ahead [Voice_over] As the global AI boom drives a massive surge in demand for electricity, Chinese companies that make power equipment and parts are experiencing electrifying growth in overseas sales. Data from Sinolink Securities shows that in the first nine months of 2025, Chinese exports of transformers and disconnectors grew by 39 and 31 percent, respectively. This firm in north China's Hebei Province has witnessed the trend first-hand. On its factory floor, an automated production line churns out a steady stream of transformer boards, some of which are deployed to data centers and grid projects in the UK, India and Uzbekistan. [Sound_bite] Qin Jinwen, vice president, power equipment manufacturer: "We see major global opportunities for AI Digital Centers, with some technologies and solutions likely debuting overseas first. This trend will further fuel the rapid international growth of our established offerings, like generation-grid-load-storage systems." [Voice_over] With the worldwide AI race pushing power grids to their limits, analysts say Chinese-made power equipment is well-placed to help fill the supply gap. [Sound_bite] Qu Haoyuan, head, electricity and new energy research group, China International Capital Corporation: "Globally, we're seeing a supply crunch for equipment like transformers. Looking ahead, the power system faces a dual challenge: as conventional power plants retire, the new capacity lacks sufficient firming capability. Meanwhile, despite progress, grid expansion is still struggling to keep pace with the rapid growth of both generation and load." [Voice_over] According to figures from management consulting firm Bain and Company, global demand for electricity to power data centers soared by some 72 percent from 2019 to 2023, largely due to the AI explosion. By 2027, demand for data center electricity could double 2023 levels and make up at least 2.6 percent of the world’s total electricity demand. [Restrictions: No access Chinese mainland]
