This is the dramatic moment stranded teachers wade across a swollen river to get home during Tropical Cyclone Koto in the Philippines.

Footage shows the educators braving the murky waters in Malbago Village, Bontoc, Southern Leyte, on Monday afternoon.

They were forced to make the perilous journey after classes were suspended across the province due to the extreme weather.

The concrete structure in the area was previously destroyed when Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the region earlier this month.

State weather bureau PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 on Tuesday morning for 29 areas affected by the storm.

Koto formed near southern Philippines on November 23, locally named Verbena. The storm made seven landfalls across the country before moving into the South China Sea on a track toward Vietnam.

The storm, together with the shear line, brought heavy rain that caused floods and landslides, leaving one dead. Its effects worsened the damage already left by recent Typhoon Kalmaegi and Fung-wong.
