Bulldozer crushes hundreds of laptops and phones seized from scam centres in Myanmar
A bulldozer crushed hundreds of laptops and phones seized from scam centres in Myanmar.
Authorities destroyed more than 20,000 mobile devices and 3,000 desktop computers that were confiscated from the Shui Gou Gu scam compound in Myawaddy, Karen State.
The Karen State Border Guard Force (BGF) and state officials said they had conducted a major operation against the notorious online fraud and smuggling ring on November 18.
The crackdown resulted in the confiscation of the devices used for fraudulent activities and the arrest of more than 900 foreign workers over three days.
Local media reported that 22 buildings associated with the Golden Globe complex were inspected during the operation.
Most of the arrested individuals were Chinese nationals, with detainees from 22 countries in total.
Lieutenant Colonel Nie Mao Zhao said: 'The operation is being carried out under the close supervision of the Karen State Government and the Chief Executive Officer for the Crackdown on Online Fraud.'
Vast criminal compounds run by organised syndicates utilise thousands of devices to perpetrate large-scale online financial fraud, known as the 'pig butchering' scam, which is being operated mostly along Myanmar's borders.
These industrial-scale operations rely on an international workforce, often Chinese nationals, who are trafficked, held against their will, and forced to carry out the fraudulent activities.
Due to pressure from international governments, Myanmar authorities have recently conducted major crackdowns, resulting in mass arrests and the destruction of thousands of confiscated mobile devices and computers.
