These intense sandstorms, also known as dust storms, occur when a combination of drought and strong winds whips up loose sand and dirt from arid and desert regions. The powerful gusts pick up the material, lifting it into the atmosphere and creating thick, blinding clouds that can travel for hundreds of miles.
