Storyline: Floods and landslides in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have left 836 people dead and more than 500 missing, according to the latest official data by Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on Thursday. All-out rescue and relief operations are underway across the affected regions, but rescue teams are struggling to reach several villages on Sumatra Island after floods washed away roads and destroyed bridges. So far, the affected residents have begun receiving aid supplies, such as instant noodles and other ready-to-eat foods in a shelter in West Sumatra province. The most pressing issue in the area is the lack of clean drinking water. Since Nov. 27, the river water has been contaminated, making access to safe water extremely difficult for the local residents. Displaced residents said that their homes were destroyed by flooding, forcing them to evacuate to shelters. Various aid supplies are being distributed, but resources remain limited. "At that moment, we heard a tremendous rumbling sound but could not know what was happening. Later, we saw a massive mountain torrent rushing down, mixed with water, mud and wood, with incredible force. This was followed by the disasters we are now facing, resulting in numerous casualties," said flood victim Marwazi. "We need rice, chili peppers, cooking oil, kerosene, and salt. We hope everything can return to normal so that everyone can live their life as before, but there is still a significant shortage of supplies," said another flood victim Katina. Currently, the Indonesian government's rescue and relocation efforts have been ramped up. However, some affected areas remain difficult to access due to damaged roads and disrupted communications. The government has dispatched heavy equipment to clear the roads and striven to restore transportation as quickly as possible. Shotlist: West Sumatra, Indonesia - Dec 3, 2025: 1.
