Terrifying Landslide Slams Road and Homes as Extreme Weather Batters West Sumatra
A dramatic video recorded on 25 November 2025 in Patapayan Paninggiran Ateh hamlet, Nagari Nan Limo, Palupuh Subdistrict, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, captures the moment a landslide roared down a hillside, hitting the national highway and striking a home and small shop owned by local resident Fahrul Ridham.
The footage shows trees swaying before suddenly collapsing as soil, rocks, and debris crash onto the road and buildings. Ridham, who filmed the incident, said he was recording the shaking trees when the hillside gave way. “The tree fell and the landslide came down right in front of me. Fortunately the debris wasn’t high enough to destroy our house and shop,” he recalled.
In the video, Ridham can be heard saying, “It’s gone. All gone,” while another resident warns people to switch off the electricity because the fallen tree struck power lines.
The landslide occurred along the Trans-Sumatra route connecting Bukittinggi in West Sumatra with Medan in North Sumatra, a corridor hit by around 30 landslide points during the ongoing hydrometeorological disaster.
Not far from Ridham’s location, another landslide buried a home, killing a resident who was found after three days of search efforts.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported on 5 December 2025 that combined flash floods and landslides across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have claimed 867 lives, with 521 people missing, 4,200 injured, and an estimated 121,000 homes damaged, forcing tens of thousands to evacuate.
