Speedboat fire forces passenger evacuation off coast of Malaysia
Passengers scrambled to safety after flames erupted on a speedboat off the Malaysian coast.
Footage shows the abandoned vessel engulfed in fire as black smoke billows into the sky in Tanjung Batu on December 4.
Labuan police chief Superintendent Mohd Hamizi Halim said initial investigations revealed the vessel had departed Menumbok Terminal at 2:45 pm, carrying 36 passengers en route to Labuan.
Just 15 minutes into the journey, flames - believed to have started in the engine - spread rapidly, causing panic on board.
The captain quickly steered the boat towards the shore, allowing all travellers and crew to escape. At least three people, including two infants aged one and two, suffered burns.
Police added: 'The Labuan Fire and Rescue Department successfully extinguished the fire at 4:15 pm.
'All three victims received outpatient treatment at Labuan Hospital. The Fire and Rescue Department is still investigating the cause of the blaze.'
