Los Angeles, United States - December 07, 2025 12/07/2025 12:00 am GMT-0800 NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. – State and city crews are working around the clock to repair an abandoned oil well from the 1920s near Marcus Avenue and 36th Street after methane and oil leaks were discovered in late October. CalGEM and contractors from Newport Beach are drilling a new angled well to access the old one, which is several hundred feet underground. The crews plan to seal the leak at approximately 800 feet deep to prevent further emissions. This project is expected to take three to four weeks to complete. Residents in the area should anticipate noise, changes in traffic patterns, and restricted garage access as the work continues through late December.
