GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - DEC. 8: Search operations are underway on Monday (Dec. 8) in the Gaza Strip as part of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement reached between Israel and Hamas to recover the bodies of Israeli hostages.
Footage showed the efforts of Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, and officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to search for the bodies of the hostages in Zaitoun neighborhood of Gaza City.
The Palestinian group Hamas says it has handed over all 20 Israeli hostages who were alive and the remains of all 28 who were killed.
The ceasefire deal has been in place in Gaza since Oct. 10, mediated by Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, and backed by the US.
Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.
Since October 2023, the Israeli army has killed over 70,000 people in Gaza, mostly women and children, and injured more than 170,900 people in a two-year war that has left much of the enclave in ruins.
