KULPMONT — Several hundred homes are without power and at least 15 people are homeless after an early morning four-alarm fire destroyed several houses and left a few firefighters with minor injuries on Scott Street in Kulpmont, according to officials.
According to Kulpmont Assistant Fire Chief Kevin O'Hearn, the fire began at 9:18 a.m. Saturday at 1324 Scott St. after a report of a kitchen fire came in to Northumberland County 911.
O’Hearn said the fire spread quickly, and dozens of firefighters arrived at the scene and began to battle the blaze.
Within minutes, there were several downed power lines, officials said.
The fire went to four-alarm status, but O’Hearn said everyone made it out of their homes safely and there were no injuries to residents.
O’Hearn said there is a radius around Scott Street, Chestnut Street and some side streets that are without power, but crews are working to restore the service.
He said the Red Cross has stations set up at the West End Fire Company and the Holy Angels Church, both in Kulpmont for residents.
Officials said they are working on opening a shelter for those displaced with the help of First United Methodist Church on Spruce Street in Kulpmont.



KULPMONT — Multiple regional fire companies combated an intense fire that affected several homes on the 1300 block of Scott Street Saturday morning.
Smoke could be seen billowing from three homes, several streets away from the scene. At least five houses have been affected by the fire.
Small crowds of people gathered on Scott Street and on side streets to observe first responders working on the scene.
Firefighters used hoses atop ladder trucks to attempt to knock down the flames from the front and back of the house.
Flames periodically shot out of the front windows on the second floor of a home at 1322 Scott St.
he rear of the homes was charred and collapsing within an hour of firefighters working on the scene.
Civilians dropped off cases of water and food for firefighters and EMS personnel.
Danville Fire Department's rehab unit set up a heated tent near the intersection of South 11th and Scott streets. Elysburg EMS and AREA Services staged on the 1200 block of Scott Street.
Fire units staged on Scott, Oak and Chestnut streets. Both lanes of traffic on Chestnut Street were cordoned off for several blocks. Northbound traffic on Chestnut Street was detoured to Maple Street.

KULPMONT, Pa. — An early morning fire in Kulpmont burned through several multi-family homes along the 1300 block of Scott Street in the borough.
Crews totalling more than 100 firefighters from across Northumberland and surrounding counties responded to the scene as the fire spread, triggering a four-alarm response. PPL is reporting more than 700 homes and businesses without power in Kulpmont.
According to the Kulpmont Deputy Fire Chief, one firefighter was checked out for smoke inhalation, but they're okay. The fire involved five structures, badly damaging four, two of which have collapsed roofs. More than 10 people were displaced. The Red Cross is on scene assisting.
PennDot says Route 61, which runs through Kulpmont, is shut down between 6th and 16th Street due to fire department activity.
