One Dead After Helicopters Collide Mid-Air In New Jersey. One person has died and another has been critically injured after two helicopters collided mid-air over southern New Jersey one person, died. The crash happened on Sunday near the town of Hammonton, about 35 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Police say one of the helicopters burst into flames before crashing to the ground, prompting an emergency response to put out the fire. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, only the pilots were on board the aircraft at the time of the collision. A federal investigation has now been launched to determine what caused the crash. Hammonton police confirmed that the surviving pilot was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The National Transportation Safety Board says the incident involved two lightweight helicopters — an Enstrom 280C and an Enstrom F-28A — and occurred shortly after 11:25 a.m. local time.
