Japan: Blizzard Turns Sapporo Roads Into Near Total Whiteout Chaos
Sapporo, Japan - January 13, 2026 NOTE: We do not have copyright for the music in the video. A video filmed on January 13, 2026, shows extreme blizzard conditions overwhelming an urban road in Sapporo’s Higashi Ward as a powerful winter storm strikes northern Japan. The footage, recorded from inside a stationary vehicle at dusk or night, captures thick snow blowing sideways in strong winds, creating near-zero visibility in a complete whiteout. A tall signpost or utility pole stands in the foreground, partially buried by deep snowdrifts covering the roadway. Faint red taillights from vehicles ahead glow weakly through the storm, while streetlights and traffic signals appear only as blurred shapes struggling to pierce the snowfall. The opposite side of the road, where a gas station is located, is completely obscured, highlighting the hazardous and isolating conditions. The video was shared by X user @KAWASAKIginza, with a caption stating: “The Kitako Line has been congested all along, and the gas station across the street is not visible.” The scene documents the impact of an ongoing blizzard affecting Hokkaido on January 13, amid a severe winter storm system that has impacted much of Japan since early January. Heavy snowfall, strong winds with gusts reaching up to 28 m/s in parts of Hokkaido, and whiteout conditions have caused widespread disruption. The storm has led to airport shutdowns, train suspensions, road closures, and traffic congestion. Snow accumulation has reached up to 2.5 meters in some areas, with forecasts calling for an additional 50 to 80 cm in mountainous regions through mid-January. In Sapporo, authorities warned against non-essential travel, while no specific injuries were reported from this scene.
