Greece: Streets Become Torrents As Storm Harry Drowns Glyfada Under Raging Floodwaters
Athens, Greece - January 21, 2026 Video filmed on January 21, 2026, captures severe street flooding in the southern Athens suburb of Glyfada as torrential rainfall from Storm Harry submerged roads and overwhelmed the area. The footage was recorded by X user Chris_Badass, a Greek resident in or near Glyfada, during daylight hours amid an intense downpour. A flooded urban street or intersection is shown transformed into a fast-flowing channel of muddy brown water. Floodwaters surge across the roadway, forming waves, ripples, and splashes driven by relentless rain and moving vehicles. A white car carefully pushes through the inundated street, producing heavy spray and a pronounced wake as it attempts to avoid stalling or hydroplaning. In several spots, the water appears deep enough to submerge curbs and sidewalks and reach the lower portions of parked vehicles and nearby buildings. Rain continues to fall steadily, with droplets visible on the camera lens and in the air, creating a hazy gray scene under overcast skies. Multi-story apartment buildings typical of Glyfada line the street, with balconies, shutters, and air-conditioning units visible as floodwater rushes past parked cars, trees, street signs, and other urban infrastructure. The scene illustrates how rapidly local drainage systems were overwhelmed. The caption posted with the video reads, “Glyfada a little while ago… #badweather,” highlighting the sudden and disruptive impact of the storm as water raced through the streets, posing dangers to traffic and pedestrians. The flooding occurred during Storm Harry, a powerful Mediterranean low-pressure system that struck Athens and surrounding suburbs on January 21, 2026. Parts of Attica recorded up to 170 millimeters of rain in less than 24 hours, an amount equivalent to several months of rainfall. The storm caused deadly flash floods, landslides, and widespread chaos across southern Athens suburbs including Glyfada. Streets turned into rivers, vehicles were swept away, basements were flooded, and emergency services responded to hundreds of calls as evacuations, road closures, and a state of emergency were declared in affected areas.
