Whitewater Carnage with Entrapment - Safety, Swift Water Rescue
Raft guide is entrapped by carabiner in whitewater incident on class IV river. Quick action by other guides present prevent potential loss of life. Very experienced 30+ year veteran raft guide becomes entrapped when his PFD becomes clipped to the carabiner holding his throw rope and a D-ring. An example of this hazard in another raft is shown for clearer explanation. I have noticed many non-locking 'biners holding throw ropes, guide belts, and the like. If it can happen to a 30 veteran guide it could happen to anyone. Use locking carabiners and make sure they are locked on the river.
