This is the harrowing moment four baby elephants were rescued by a digger after falling into a water-filled pit when fled in terror from gunshots. The adorable creatures were spotted desperately clambering on top of each other to escape the sump - a man-made hole to collect waste water and chemicals. Rescuers said the wild elephants had ran blindly in fright after hearing gun shots from hunters and went crashing into the 12ft deep filthy pool in Chachoengsao province, Thailand. They needed to bring a digger to create a pathway for the creatures to escape as they frantically stood on each other's heads - within moments of drowning each other from exhaustion. Animal rescuer Auncha Poltawee said: ''The people were shooting the guns and making a loud noise. They were only shooting in the sky but it is a big shock for elephants.
