On January 26, 2017 Telluride HeliTrax performed planned avalanche control work on Ajax Peak at the end of the box canyon that contains Telluride, Colorado. The area was closed ahead of the bombing, and explosives were dropped from a helicopter. This work is performed most years so an avalanche does not occur at an unplanned time when people are present on the road below.
