Charging Chimpanzee in Mahale NP, Tanzania

Buy video

In October 2011, four subordinate male chimpanzees attacked and killed their alpha male in Mahale Mountains National Park. Pimu, a particularly nasty chimp who had once grabbed and shook my leg on a walk, had been the alpha male since 2007. In that time he had assaulted numerous members of the group including his mother and sister. Following his Pimu's murder, their was a power vacuum which was what we were witnessing this day when we were charged by one of the males seeking to assert his authority.
