My backyard during Durban's October 2017 'storm', a term which seems to be a bit of an understatement considering what we experienced for 3 brief but destructive hours! Near hurricane-level winds and rain, with some hail and fireworks thrown in. A usually relaxed tropical city accustomed to the odd seasonal thunderstorms, Durban and its citizens were not prepared for this weather system, as our Municipality had erroneously issued no warning of its expected intensity. As a result, many people were stuck on the roads when it hit and became trapped in flash flooding. Properties were severely damaged, and a number of people perished trying to get home or find shelter. The residents of Durban, especially south and central, spent the next few days mopping up, repairing the extensive damage, and causing insurance companies a lot of grief. As one old gentleman down the road said to me the next day, "I moved here in 1952 and have never seen anything like it in Durban in my life!" We did not expect this blustery bull!!
