Appalling weather conditions on the A66 in Cumbria

Buy video

The A66 is a major road crossing the Pennines in northern England. The section between Brough and Bowes is especially vulnerable to bad weather because of the high elevation at Stainmore of 441 metres. The main hazards are from heavy snow and strong winds, which often can cause the road to be closed to high sided vehicles and caravans. It is a regular occurrence in the winter time to have vehicles stuck in the snow or high sided trucks overturning. This footage is showing large vehicles in very wet and dangerous windy driving conditions. Please note the green articulated lorry descending the hill on the right is starting to sway side to side as the strong wind catches its high curtain sides. Captured on the 22nd November at 2.00 pm
