Eight arms to hold you - Octopus mating caught on camera

Buy video

A scuba diver based in Tanzania has captured the rare sight of two octopi mating.

Although it's quite hard to work out where one octopus ends and another begins, the tangle of tentacles is strangely beautiful.

The scene was captured in Mafia Island Marine Park on January 19.

Octopus reproduction is very unusual and little studied.

The male uses a specialised arm called a hectocotylus to transfer packets of sperm from the terminal organ of the reproductive tract (a kind of "penis") into the female's cavity.
