Rescue teams worked through the night on Saturday to cut a driver free from their car after it fell off a cliff at Portland Bill in Dorset in the UK.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.15pm local time on Saturday night, following reports that the vehicle had crashed onto rocks next to the obelisk at Portland Bill lighthouse.

One casualty was trapped inside and rescuers had to work fast due to the incoming tide.

The casualty was cut from the wreckage and stretchered to safety.

They were then transferred by ambulance to Dorset County hospital.

The extent of their injuries isn't yet known.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.

The fullteam were paged at 23:15 and asked to back up our flank team, Portland Bill CRT. Both teams had been tasked to reports of casualty, who was trapped in their vehicle at the base of the cliff, next to the obelisk at Portland Bill Lighthouse. Both teams made their way to the scene, along with many units from Dorset Fire & Rescue, Dorset Police, Weymouth ALB Lifeboat, and SWAST.
Upon arrival the teams quickly established the location of the casualty, where the vehicle was on its side, precariously close to the fast incoming tide. The conscious casualty was immediately cut from their vehicle by Dorset Fire & Rescue, whilst Coastguard members provided water rescue cover, along with Weymouth Lifeboat, who had been tasked to wait offshore, due to the risk from the very heavy swell. When free, the casualty was quickly assessed and transferred to the Coastguard stretcher. The teams then helped convey the casualty stretcher to the top of the cliffs by hand using a chain technique, allowing immediate extraction over very difficult terrain.
Due to the scale of the potential injuries sustained by the casualty, both Rescue 175 and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance had been put on standby, and were tasked to attend in order to airlift the casualty should it be deemed necessary. Upon arrival, Rescue 175’s Coastguard paramedic worked with the SWAST technician to stabilise the casualty, whilst being assisted by other team members, before Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance arrived on scene.
