Elephant Seal weaner stuck in channel close
Southern Elephant seals (Mirounga leonina) drop their pups around early October on South Georgia. After their very rapid growth and weaning after 3 to 3.5 weeks, the large pups are abandoned by their mothers, and remain on the beach until they are large enough to go to sea and fend for themselves. This pup had fallen into a narrow stream channel, and was struggling to escape – it did, finally!
