Rare Great White Egret at Sunbiggin Tarn Cumbria

Buy video

The Great White egret is about the same size as a grey heron but completely white. They are quite rare with about 35 Birds wintering in the UK. They are usually found further South on the continent but with climate change they have been occurring much further north.

I was quite surprised to see this one looking very happy eating small fish from the edge of the tarn. It stayed around for several weeks during the winter and was easy to see being a large white bird.

Footage showing the egret fishing at the edge of the tarn lit by the evening light. Captured on the 6th of January 2018
