This is the moment that Brazilian surfer Rodrigo Koxa rode a monster wave in Portugal, earning him a nomination at the World Surf League awards, announced last week.

The unseen footage captured on November 8, 2017, shows the big wave surfer - the third man seen surfing in the video - riding one of the largest waves of the season at Praia do Norte beach near the fishing village of Nazare.

Koxa's skill at riding the wave saw him being nominated for the World Surf League's Biggest Wave Awards.

The 18th Annual WSL Big Wave Awards competition window concluded on March 20, 2018, spanning the previous 12 months of surf action.

According to the World Surf League: "The Quiksilver Airlift XXL Biggest Wave Award goes to the surfer who, by any means available, catches and rides the biggest wave of the year. The winner will receive a $25,000 prize and the photographer of the ride will receive a $5,000 prize."

The nominations were unveiled last week and the actual ceremony takes place on April 28.

Praia do Norte beach, near the fishing village of Nazaré, has become famous for huge waves since Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara set a then-record in 2011 for the largest wave ever surfed when he rode a 78-foot wave.
