Courting cuttlefish laying eggs. Male lays reassuring tentacle on female

Buy video

Off the island of Malapascua in the Philippines I had the delight of this rare encounter of a courting couple of cuttlefish laying eggs. The female is the largest. As she lays her eggs the male gently places a reassuring tentacle on her back.
Cuttlefish can change the colour and texture of their skin. Interestingly the single bone (the cuttlebone) that characterises their species (Cephalopod) is used as a dietary calcium supplement for caged birds. Man also uses the cuttlefish as food and for ink. Personally, I prefer to see them in the ocean. Beautiful.
