Hungry pigs! Young male Warthogs grazing on their knees – side-on view

The Common Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus) is a member of the pig family – its name refers to the ‘warts’ on its face. Warthogs have two pairs of tusks that protrude from the mouth and curve upwards, as well as a mane of coarse hair running down the spine. Warthogs are the only pig adapted to savanna and are omnivorous, taking a wide range of foods including fresh grass, roots, fruits, insects and even carrion. A Warthog sow and her large piglets were grazing on the road edge near Satara Restcamp in Kruger Park. Warthogs often graze on their knees probably because their short necks make it hard for them to reach short grass. The park was in a severe drought, and the only green grass was growing on road verges where rain running off the road provided a little more water for grass to grow.
