Riot police fired tear gas at incensed protesters in Thessaloniki on Sunday (June 24) who had gathered to protest a Macedonia name deal.

Nationalists oppose an agreement that would rename Greece's neighbour North Macedonia and allow the Greek province of Macedonia to continue to use that name.

Video shows tear gas being fired and protesters running away. A series of loud bangs can be heard, as well as the sound of breaking glass.

At least one protester can be seen hurling a chair in the direction of the riot police.

A protester waving the national flag of Greece also confronts a riot police officer.

The protest took place outside the offices of the country's ruling parties, Syriza and the Independent Greeks.

Footage filmed earlier shows a large rally, with flares being set off.

One elderly man holds a sign reading: "Macedonia is Greece. A state with history and culture. It is not a Slavic state."
