Police clash with protestors during overnight riots in Greece over Macedonia name change

Massive riots continued on the night of June 26 and into the next day in the Greek port city of Thessaloniki as protestors demonstrated against an agreement signed Sunday, which would see the former Yugoslav nation's name changed to the Republic of North Macedonia.

The video, filmed past midnight at YMCA Square, shows violent clashes between protestors, seen throwing stones and glass bottles, and officers, who fired tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

Since Macedonia's declaration of independence from Yugoslavia in 1991, the name of the Balkan state has been the source of appropriation concerns in Greece. The decision has been met by mixed reactions, with nationalists on both sides opposing the change and others believing it brings an end to a 27-year conflict rooted in national identity.
