This year's edition of the World Cup has given us plenty of examples of how football brings people together.

But none demonstrates this more vividly than these Colombian fans consoling a devastated young Poland fan after his team was knocked out of the tournament in the group stages.

Poland were eliminated in the group stages after losing 3-0 to Colombia on Sunday.

Six-year-old Poland fan Aleks broke down in the stands after the final whistle, according to his father, Iain Meiklejohn.

But the Colombian fans were gracious in their victory.

"Aleks was in tears at the final whistle as his team were knocked out of the tournament. However, the unbelievable Colombia fans gathered around us, consoled Aleks and started to chant ‘Polska! Polska!’," said Meiklejohn.

"It was a wonderful sign of friendship between the supporters of Colombia and Poland," he added.

Thousands of fans from Colombia, and South America in general, are thought to have made the 10,000-kilometre trek to Russia to support their teams.
