A marine speaks publicly about his homosexuality at a press conference marking the history of the armed forces in Chile, in Santiago on Wednesday.

Mauricio Ruiz, was accompanied by a spokesperson from the Movement for Homosexual Integration and Liberation ( Movilh) in a move to encourage young homosexual people to join the armed forces in the country.

The press conference, which had been negotiated with the country’s Navy for a year, was part of an ongoing dialogue between Chile’s military institutions and gay rights groups to try and end discrimination.
