A monarch butterfly emerges from its chrysalis after about two weeks cocooned.

"A few weeks ago, I found the egg on milkweed in my neighbourhood, took it in, and watched it hatch into a microscopic caterpillar," wrote the filmer. It became enormous very quickly, and formed the chrysalis.

"The butterflies usually hatch very early in the morning, so I got up and waited for it. I was lucky enough to catch this on video!" she added.

The footage was filmed in Chicago on July 22.

This is one of three monarch chrysalises I've cared for this summer, emerging from its cocoon. When the butterfly is ready to emerge, the chrysalis changes color and you can see the colors of the wings through the membrane. The butterflies usually hatch very early in the morning, so I got up and waited for it. I was lucky enough to catch this on video! Once its wings fully expand, which takes several hours, it flies away to feed on flower nectar and begin its life.
